Founded in 1919 by the Welhausen family in Yoakum, Texas, Tex Tan began as a small tannery and later became a renowned manufacturer of Western saddles, belts, and leather goods. Renamed Texas Tanning & Manufacturing Co. in 1929 and later Tex Tan in the 1940s, the company became a staple of American Western wear and was eventually acquired by the Tandy Corporation in 1956.
